#BerlinBrigade in the news: Berlin Brigade Veteran participates in Fishing Tournament

In the news feed this morning (06/17), I came across a very interesting article from Southern Maryland Newspapers through their website "SoMdNews.com" that mentions Berlin Brigade Veteran participating in the annual Paralyzed Veterans of America/Walter Reed annual bass fishing tournament held at Smallwood State Park in Marbury, Maryland.

The website article mentions Berlin Brigade Veteran is Michael Murphy, 49, from the great state of Kentucky. The article mentioned the top fishermen, unfortunately Murphy was not mentioned among them. However, Murphy is quoted in the article, "It’s been beautiful, it’s just the fish aren’t biting much."

Hey, I firmly believe a bad day of fishing beats a good day doing anything else (including work). Whether it was a good day or bad day that is for Murphy and all the other Veterans at the tournament that attended to let us know. However, I suspect they will say it was a good day. All of us need all the good days we can take.

In the meantime, I am going to pack my gear to get some fishing time in before it gets a little too hot down here at the BerlinBrigade.com Headquarters.

The Eastern European Gambit




There was a time when it looked like Russia and the United States were going to make something good happen. Something good for the entire planet. However, that was not to be. Just as the Berlin Wall fell over 25 years ago, the times have changed.

Sure, the Soviet Union has ceased to be but that does not mean the land grab is over. It was easy after the Second World War for the Soviet Union to take everything it acquired either through battle or through Allied agreements (Tehran, Yalta, & Potsdam) and create alliances such as the Warsaw Pact but that was a long time ago. Things have changed since the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The land grab continues with Russia acting like a vision of its former self. It took Crimea with little to no effort. Now it has its vision on the Ukraine and has done so since the annexation of Crimea. While, officially, there are no Russian forces in the Ukraine there are Pro-Russian forces doing their thing to destabilize the area that is of prime interest to Russia.

That is where the concern begins. See geographically Ukraine borders with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. That is a little too close for comfort for many people in the west. 

So what happens next? NATO has to act and react without actively getting involved. The “Pentagon is considering a plan to store heavy weapons and equipment in Eastern Europe to reassure allies that Washington has their backs in case of Russian aggression. The equipment, which would include battle tanks and other heavy weapons could supply as many as 5,000 American troops in several Baltic and Eastern European countries.” A recent article in the New York Time quoted James G. Stavridis, a retired admiral and the former supreme allied commander of NATO.

While the amount of equipment considered is nothing compared to anything that Russia can muster in the no time, should it to “officially” decide to make a move against the Ukraine. However, I agree that should the “balloon go up” in the Ukraine having something close by. As the New York Times mentioned about the pre-positioned equipment, “it would serve as a credible sign of American commitment, acting as a deterrent the way that the Berlin Brigade did after the Berlin Wall crisis in 1961.”

Now do not get me wrong, I am not for letting the situation in the Ukraine become a shooting. What I am for is if it does come to bullets flying then let us make certain that we have the back of those that need our back. Heck, we did not spend all that time, manpower, resources and money in Europe during the Cold War to let it all become a new Cold or Hot War all over again.

June 2015 SITREP

Greetings All,

Here were are almost halfway through 2015. Luckily, it has been a little quiet here at the BerlinBrigade.com World Headquarters.

Unluckily, it has been too quiet and that's not a good thing.

By too quiet, I mean that there has not been anything of note to report back to you. While there is not much to say, it is also good that nothing bad has happened.

In Memoriam

Recently, over the course of twenty-four hours, we were made aware of the passing of two our Berlin Brigade Brothers. While no one likes to hear of a death, especially Family and Friends, it is an unfortunate consequence of life. All of us will leave this mortal coil one day, it cannot be avoided.

One minute we are here and the next we aren't. No trumpets nor fanfare marks that moment when we cease to be. That is sad. 

For soldiers, the reality is even sadder. I have always considered the death of a fellow soldier a very terrible thing. Here is someone that knows me though not personally but knows me because we share the same love of country, that love that we showed when we raised our right hand and took our oath. We share the same pains and joys, especially if he was an Infantryman like me. We have seen the same things and had common experiences, especially if he served with the Berlin Brigade. 

We walked our talk. Then to have one less means the rest of us now have to tighten our perimeter because we are all we have left. We must continue to have each others back. Though we might not have served at the same or were not in the same unit but we were there, in Berlin. We were there at a time when things could have gone sour at the drop of a hat. Sometimes, that hat did drop. We were there to do a job that not very many were able to do but WE DID IT because that's what we signed up to do.

There might not be tears for you when your time comes nor do I expect tears to be shed for me when my time comes. However, we should all expect that every Berlin Brigade Veteran tightens up, gets shoulder to shoulder and continues the mission. Though the Berlin Wall has fallen, the Berlin Brigade deactivated and Communism is a fading memory, our mission will never end. We were Soldiers then as we are NOW. That is why we must carry on.

First, we say Goodbye to our buddies, friends of our youth. Until we meet again.

Rest In Peace Roy Ramirez, Eric Stephen Sly, and all the others that have gone before.

Wait A Minute Where Did February Go? (aka March 2015 update)

Seriously, did anyone see what happened to February?

I mean, there we were celebrating Groundhog Day and eating chocolates from St. Valentine's Day while enjoying the day off on Presidents Day. Now look at us!

March is well underway and what have we got to show for February?

Let's break it down.

Also on February 1st, the BerlinBrigade(dot)com Registry was updated. After that round of adds, changes, & deletions we are hovering real close to the 5000 member mark. Not bad. Not bad at all. Thank you to everyone that has signed up.

Just after Presidents Day, our Good Friend, Chris Kuhn is reminds us that he is "putting together a reunion for the 5/502. The rooms are in the Stratsphere resort and casino Las Vegas" on July 24-26. This is part of the 5th Battalion 502nd Infantry group. JANUARY 2015

Greetings Everyone!
Hope that 2015 is finding you in a good health. I also hope you are ready for all the new challenges that are ahead for all of us.

This update while overdue is also going to be brief. It has been an unusually slow month here but then again who really wants to get back into the swing of things after this past Holiday Season?

While we still have one week left in this month there are plenty of things still left to do.

PODCAST: While it was recorded over the weekend of Jan 24 - 25 it has yet to be edited so be on the lookout of that to drop early this work week.

REGISTRY: This will be completed and updated to the website sometime this week (shooting for Wednesday 1/28).

WEBSITE: New adds and changes will be made by Saturday (1/31) including new additions to the Gallery.

27 OCTOBER 2014 SITREP

SITREP
For those that don't know, SITREP stands for SITUATION REPORT.

In the Army, especially when we were deployed, conducting some type of operation or mission, over the radio a higher level element would call in, via radio, "SITREP, over."

That meant they wanted to know what our current situation was or is. Usually the response was what was expected, such as, "we are engaging the enemy" or the ever popular "situation normal all f##ked up" (SNAFU). No matter what was actually happening when the request for a SITREP was received the only thing that was expected was the truth. Plain and simple, unedited truth and about 4 times out of 10 that's what was given.

4 times out of 10? (OK, I might be just a wee bit exaggerating.)

However, consider the following: either the situation is more dire than it actually is or the reporting parting was under-estimating the severity of the entire situation. The Fog of War will usually do that.

Fog of War?

The Fog of War is the uncertainty of situational awareness that comes with being in the middle of a military operation. At some point, during an engagement all you can see is what you can see. You and those around you will begin to lose sight of the big picture and start to focus in on what is no more than the throwing distance of a hand grenade.

I hope I haven't lost you.

While it may appear to be a SNAFU, we are far from it. The Education Initiative is slowly starting to take shape. The first web pages are still under development and it is my intention of having them online before Thanksgiving 2014.

I know earlier in the month I wrote that it would be soon. Then as I started to create the content and the initial pages it became quite clear that there was no way I was going to make it.

With regards to the following pages here is the situation:

About BerlinBrigade.com Education Initiative

Greetings again, 

How are you? I do hope all is good in your neck of the woods! 

 This weekend I want to briefly talk about the BerlinBrigade.com Education Initiative. 

In order to get it launched and well underway I believe you should know and understand what it is that I am trying to do with the EI. 

In its simplest form, I envision the BerlinBrigade.com Education Initiative to be the “go-to” place for all Educators about West Berlin, the Berlin Wall. the US Army in Berlin, the Occupation of Berlin from 1945 to 1990, and the people that served in Berlin during that period of World History. 

The vision is to provide accurate information about dates and events during the Occupation of Berlin. Whenever possible, it would great to have first-hand accounts of those events in West Berlin. Then take that information and put into a format that is used by students and scholars as part of their academic pursuits. 

The reason behind the initiative is to fill a void that is rapidly created as time moves further and further away from time and place in history that we knew as the Occupation of Berlin (‘45–’90). 

Therefore, I will be creating a list of the dates and events that I would like to initially provide and then if you or someone you know would like to contribute to providing the “real” Berlin Brigade story.

It will be a long and arduous task but with your support, I do believe we can make the BerlinBrigade.com Education Initiative a first class affair. 

In order, to become the premiere location for all things Berlin Brigade we must work together. 

Therefore, I want to create a Master Group. 

The Master Group will compose of individuals that will help guide and direct the Education Initiative. If you feel you are up the challenge then please drop me an email (dave@berlinbrigade.com). 

 This offer is open to not just Veterans of the Berlin Brigade but to Educators at the K-12 and College & University levels. I would really like to hear from you.

Friends, Fans, Supporters, and Visitors

It is with a heavy heart that I must apologize for shirking my responsibilities to you. I undertook these responsibilities back in 1997 when I created the first rendition of BerlinBrigade.com.

These responsibilities included updating the website to ensure that long lost friends could find each other. Over the years, I have tried to keep up with that. However, as you and I both know life happens.

Spending time with the family gets top priority. Then comes work, we have to do that dirty deed in order to pay the bills, keep food on the table, and keep the kids clothed, and so on. Now add that together with the unexpected and there we go. The things we want to do suffer because of the things we need/must do. I am not telling you anything new.

What I am telling is before you know it 17 years have gone by and what do I have to show for it?

A LOT!!!

I have met some wonderful people. Heard about people re-connecting after so many years. The stories. The stories have been wonderful. I feel so very honored and privileged to be the one that heard the stories right from the source. You.

Thank you. I will always be grateful.

At BerlinBrigade.com, I will always continue to be grateful to be the caretaker of your memories, words, and images. It is an honor and a responsibility that I have never shirked.

What I did shirk was keeping you updated and informed. 

Therefore, I will let my actions speak for themselves and not my words. 

In the past days, numerous individuals have written to me expressing their shock at the sudden closure of a favorite and honored Berlin Brigade related website. Why it closed may never be known to the rest of us, we have to respect the decision as to why the website was closed. I was not told or given and explanation to pass along to others. I am just as saddened and shocked as the rest of us were when we found out it closed. 

I am certain that I am safe in saying that ALL of us will always be thankful and grateful for Reinhard von Bronewski’s support, dedication, and commitment to the US Army Berlin Brigade and its Soldiers and Airmen. Thank you Reinhard!

Rest assured folks; at this time, there are NO plans to close BerlinBrigade.com. However, I will be curtailing some of the activities on the website and introducing new areas.

I will spearhead a new section on the BerlinBrigade.com website. It will be dedicated to educating Elementary, Middle School, High School, and College students about the Berlin Brigade, its mission, and what the men and women did to support and defend the city of West Berlin.

I know that over the years, I have wanted to launch this and I have asked for help from some of you but none of that has yielded any positive results. Therefore, I am not going to wait around for others to provide their content. Look for the new section in the coming days (NOT weeks).

For those that want to contribute there will an area that will explain how you can do that.

July 2014

Here we meet again. The first half of 2014 is over and now we start the fast slide down to the holidays. Where does the time go? Seriously, just when we get used to writing 2014 on our checks we now have to get our minds wrapped around writing 2015. 

In the meantime, there are plenty of things going on here, there, and everywhere. 

Of course, we just celebrated our Nation’s Independence Day on the fourth. Did you know that 4 July is also BERLIN BRIGADE UNIT DAY? That is right, it was designated that in 1962 in recognition of the day the US Forces assumed the occupation of their sector in Berlin back in 1945. 

In France, July 14 is their National Day or “Bastille Day” the day that commemorates the start of the French Revolution or the storming of the Bastille. 

July 20 is Moon Day commemorates the day man first walked on the moon in 1969, 45 years ago. 

That’s about it for holidays or other important days in July with the exception of National Ice Cream Day (July 20/ 3rd Sunday of the month) & National Lasagna Day (July 29). 

On a side note, many of the older Veterans will remember that on July 12, 1973 a fire destroys the entire sixth floor of the National Personnel Records Center of the United States. Things have not been the same since. 

A little closer to home, it was on July 25, 1961 US President John F. Kennedy gives a speech emphasizing that any attack on Berlin is an attack on NATO. Check out our website and Facebook page on the 25th for a little something on President Kennedy’s speech.

World Cup 2014: USA vs. Germany (June 26, 2014)

Hello und Wie Gehts?  How are you? June 26, 2014. What a great day!

The title of this blog post is something that we have been familiar with for so very long: USA vs. Germany.

This time USA vs. Germany is all about the soccer pitch.  We knew this day was coming.  We knew this day was going to happen.  We have been excited and looked forward to this day since the 2014 World Cup group selections were announced.  When the United States was put in the same group as Germany, many of us on both sides of the Atlantic began looking forward to this day.

Well, that day is today! Who do we cheer for?

Many of us will cheer for the United States.  Many others will cheer for Germany.  Today, however, I find myself in a unique situation, I am cheering for both.

Born and raised in the United States, I cheer for the United States because that is my home team.  Having such a deep bond and a deep connection with Berlin and Germany, I cheer for Germany.  Then what makes it even more interesting is that there are five players on the U.S. team that have roots in Germany (dual citizenship) and the head coach is from Germany.  It can be difficult and deciding whom to root for becomes even more difficult.

Thus, I have decided that I will cheer for both teams and expect a very good match.  No matter who wins, loses, or ties, all of us are expecting a very good match in Brazil today.

Well here we are again. Another month and another chance to say Hello. I do hope this post finds you and your family and friends in good health. Personally, May 2014 was a good month until a member of my family was suddenly taken from us on the weekend of Memorial Day. Off we went on an even sudden trip to St. Louis, Missouri.

Next time, we go to St. Louis will be on a much more slower pace and rest assured I will be planning a deliberate get together for those of you in the area. Be on the lookout for something to happen around Thanksgiving 2014.

Now let's press on. Hopefully, June will be much better for all of us.

The month of June is full of plenty of pomp and circumstance. 

June: High School and College Graduations. Time to get those young citizens out from the behind the books and into the workplace. If you know someone that's graduating, recommend them US ARMY INFANTRY. (Sorry, but that's my personal bias).


June 6: 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Normandy. Take a moment to remember those soldiers that stormed the beaches and parachuted behind enemy lines. They started something that was left to last soldier in the Berlin Brigade to finish.

June 15: Father's Day. Tell Dad we said "Happy Father's Day!"

June 21: Summer Solstice. The first day of Summer and it is also the longest day of the year. Remember, when we were in Berlin and we would go out to the clubs around 10pm, the sky would still be lit. Then when we would, finally, make it out, the sunlight was in full force. Talk about making a quick turnaround back into the club thinking we had not partied long enough.

This month, I plan on slowing it down just a bit. There are plenty of things going on outside the website that I just want to do that I will be disconnecting from the Internet a little more than normal.

MAY 8, 2014 is the 69th Anniversary of the End of World War II in Europe or V-E Day

MAY 11, 2014 is Mother's Day! Tell Your Mom I said "Happy Mother's Day"

MAY 12, 2014 marks the 65th Anniversary of the end of the SOVIET BLOCKADE OF BERLIN. In 1949, the Soviets capitulated after realizing that the Berlin Airlift (Operation Vittles) was working. The amount of supplies coming in to the city was more than enough to sustain the citizens of Berlin. The Soviets couldn't compete so they had to try something different.

Several museums and organizations in the city of BERLIN, GERMANY are holding numerous memorial ceremonies. If you happen to be in Berlin tell them BERLINBRIGADE.com says HELLO and we are thinking about them.

MAY 12, 2014 is also the day that our very own David G. Guerra publishes AIR BRIDGE BERLIN. It is a story set in Berlin, chiefly Tempelhof airport during the heady days of the Berlin Airlift (Operation Vittles).  The story is centered on the hypothesis that cargo was not only flying in to Berlin but also flying out. MAY 17, 2014 is ARMED FORCES DAY here in the United States. "On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the Department of Defense. Each of the military leagues and orders was asked to drop sponsorship of its specific service day in order to celebrate the newly announced Armed Forces Day. The Army, Navy and Air Force leagues adopted the newly formed day. The Marine Corps League declined to drop support for Marine Corps Day but supports Armed Forces Day, too." • ARMED FORCES DAY also marked the OFFICIAL START of the US ARMY BERLIN BRIGADE's "Parade Season". The "unofficial start" was the Monday before the Armed Forces Day parade when units would practice standing and marching on the Four Ring or Platz des 4. Juli (4th of July Platz).

MAY 26, 2014 is MEMORIAL DAY here in the United States. "Memorial Day is officially celebrated on the last Monday during the month of May. Memorial Day is dedicated to service men and women who gave their lives for freedom and country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have passed away. The roots of Memorial Day observance, goes back to 1865 and the end of the Civil War."

ABOUT AIR BRIDGE BERLIN
“Air Bridge Berlin” is set in 1948 Berlin during Operation Vittles (Berlin Airlift). The story is about a US Army Soldier, an Infantryman, assigned to guard Tempelhof airport that is befriended by a young Berliner that was only there for the candy parachutes that were falling from the sky.

As their friendship grows, they are unaware that while the cargo planes are bringing food, medicine, fuel and other much needed supplies into the city something else was being flown out.

When the young Berliner sees something he was not supposed to, things start to heat up. He turns to his new friend to help and soon they are on a race against time. In “Air Bridge Berlin”, the reader will run into some old friends and meet a new friend to the Occupied Berlin series.

Alright, here's a something for everyone. When I wrote "Doughboy City" I was looking for a fantastic cover image then came across the photo by my friend, Charles R Sledge, and a few emails later his image became the cover image of the book. THANK YOU, CHARLES.

Now, it is your turn. Your shot at literary immortality. For the next book "AIR BRIDGE BERLIN", I am calling out to all the artists out there to submit your cover image design. So from now until April 5, 2014 I invite you to submit your art to dave@berlinbrigade.com.

Then from April 6 to 12 everyone will get a chance to vote for the image you think is the one that should go on the cover of "Air Bridge Berlin".

March 2014 Update

Greetings All,
Can you believe 2 months down and March is underway?

So much has happened in the past two months that one can only imagine what the rest of the year will bring.

Well, I welcome you here and I am glad that you stopped by. This month we have some good stuff on tap.
